Orange and white hat

The fabric I used for this hat suits perfectly for this kind of hat with floating edge. It a little bit rigid but not too much. The decoraton on the back came to me when I was finishing the main hat, I thought it would be lovely with a big imposing decoration on the back. It is a great addition to the complete outfit.
The outfit includes: a dress, a bag, a scarf and a hat.

–    Edge: 2 circles 4 ¼” diameter (11cm)
–    Top of the hat: 1 circle 1 ½” (4cm) cut on the center of the two big circles
–    Side of the hat: 5 ½” x 1 ¼” (14cm x 3cm)
–    Ribbon

Step 1
–    Sew the two big circles around the edge
–    Return the fabrics and sew again to avoid puffy aspect
–    Sew the side of the hat inside the edge. Do not close it.

Step 2
–    Sew the top of the hat and close the hat
–    Sew the ribbon and a decoration on the back

Thanks Lyndsey! I have always thought that I would need a specific fabric to sew a hat, like a rigid or semi rigid fabric. But actually it can be done with pretty much all kind of fabrics.
Please send over some pictures when you’re done, I’d love to see them 🙂
      Happy sewing!

(Now i need to try the gloves :))

A bit confuse on how you join the top circle to the sides and to the big circle..? How did you “close” it?

      Hi Iris,
It was not easy to show all the details of how to sew this particular hat, because of the color of the fabric. My camera wouldn’t catch the details.
I would suggest you look at some of the other hats I sewed to see the process. Here is a link:
For this hat I started by the top of the hat and then sewed the edge. But you can do it either way 🙂
      I hope it helped,
      Happy sewing!

Thank you for the tutorial! I crafted this hat plus a bag from another set to go with a blue-white striped dress. The result can be found here : hat and bag

      I love it!
I have been looking for a white ablue fabric for a while to do a “navy” outfit and was not able to find one.
      This is really pretty!
Thank you very much for sharing, you made my day 🙂

Thank you so much for the help you have posted on line. I’m not much of a seamstress and your easy to follow instructions are great! Do you know how to make boas or fur coats for Barbie?

Thank you for this nice message! I would use one of the coat pattern to do a fur coat.
The patterns can be adapted easily to any kind of fabric.
      Happy sewing!
