I wanted to sew a dress with a train for a long time. I had to figure out an easy way to sew the train and still have a beautiful dress. I am very happy with the result and this dress is easy to sew that you’ll want to sew it again and again. I used a light satin fabric that does not fray (well… not much at least).

Material:
- Skirt: 19” x 9” (48cm x 23cm)
- Top: 6” x 3” (15cm x 7.5cm)
- 2 sew on snaps
Step 1:
- Pleat the skirt fabric in two and put a pin at 2 ¾” (7cm) on the top.
- Then cut in diagonal from the pin to the corner

Step 2:
- Sew a hem on top and sides of the top fabric
- Sew the breast pleats at 2” (5cm) from each side, and up to ¾” (2cm) from the top
- Draw the line for sewing the top and skirt together: 1” (2.5cm) on the sides and ½” (1cm) on the front – see picture

Step 3:
- Sew the top and bottom fabric together following the line, leave a little of fabric for the hem on each side to close the dress.
- Sew the dress together, up to 1” (2.5cm) from the waist. And then sew a hem on the rest to close the dress
- Sew a hem on the back on the dress - Sew the sew on snaps

Hi Rusty,
You can click on picture to see them bigger. For step one, take the bottom fabric and fold it into two. Then put a pin on top on the folded side. Then cut in diagonale from that pin to the opposite corner. The purpose is to build the train.
You will end up with a trapezoid.

I love this dress! However, I’m not sure how to make the breast pleat. How do I fold it? inward or outward?
It will be inward. So you can’t see them.
The easiest way would be to put the top fabric on the doll backside and then put a pin under each breast. The fabric has ti fit the doll, and you should be able to close it on the back.
Then sew following the pins.

Thank you so much for posting this! My daughter just made the purple dress with train for our friend’s 3 year old (who just got her first two Barbies) and it turned out great. Simple yet elegant. “Micro-sewing” is really fun. Fun use of our scrap fabrics and a good way to while away winter eves.
That one is just one of my favorite. I did it in so many colors and fabric. Even with a left over from curtains! and it became a wedding dress !
I did a few for my daughters friends for their birthday, it’s easy and has a lot of success!
My daughter calls it prom dress!

Sorry, I’m not quite clear on Step 1. Do you fold it in half the 19″ way, or the 9″ way? So should the corner you’re cutting it to be the 9″ long side or the 19″ long side? Just want to make sure before I start. Thanks!
I am not really sure what you’re asking?
Fold the biggest fabric and cut from the corner to form the train of the dress. I guess if you try it, and pin instead of cutting, you’ll find which way to do it.
